My Story

I found naturopathic medicine while trying to help my son with gastrointestinal, sensory, and motor issues as a newborn. My son’s illness didn’t have a neat diagnosis – it was hard to make sense of the symptoms that affected him in so many different ways. Naturopathy not only offered alternative treatments, but also a different way to think about illness. Through this process I came to appreciate the complex connections between the mind and body, gut and brain. Bringing these ideas together made healing possible.

As he got better, I decided I needed to learn more about naturopathy and share it with others. I earned my Doctorate from the National University of Natural Medicine, a four-year accredited program that included a two-year internship at the school’s Portland clinic. In addition, I studied neurofeedback at the EEG Institute with Sue and Siegfried Othmer, who have practiced neurofeedback for 35 years. I am a board-certified and licensed Naturopath in the state of Oregon.

I help kids and adults using natural medicine and neurofeedback, offering safe and effective therapies that get to the root causes of illness. Taking a “whole person” approach, I consider the physical, mental, and emotional health of my patients because they must be understood and addressed together.

To understand the context of a patient’s illness, the physician must take the time to listen to the patient’s story.

Your care is individualized. Together we discuss treatment options and decide what best meets your needs and goals. Therapies include clinical nutrition, nutritional supplements, homeopathy, neurofeedback, botanical medicine, and pharmaceuticals when necessary. For stress disorders and healing trauma, I find homeopathy and neurofeedback particularly effective. I have a special interest in conditions such as:

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety
  • Autism and Asperger Syndrome
  • Behavior and mood disorders
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Depression
  • Digestive pain, gas, and bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Food intolerances/sensitivities
  • IBS and SIBO
  • Insomnia
  • Learning issues
  • PTSD
  • Heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD
  • Seizures and tics
  • Sensory issues

Healing in Layers

We often say that the healing process is a little bit like peeling back the layers of an onion. We treat what we find on the surface, and then, as that layer is removed, we may see something that was previously hidden. The first symptom we notice is just that — a symptom. It is the body’s attempt to communicate what is wrong. Our job is to look beneath it and trace the symptom back to its source. With each layer exposed, the body asks us for something. We give it, and then ask “Is there more?” The body will tell us what it needs, if we listen and respond.

We must commit to becoming healthy and to being kind to ourselves in the process. Do not let yourself be discouraged by a step back after you have taken steps forward. Sometimes something deeper needs help before we can “fix” what’s on the surface. It will be worth it. This is how you heal… layer by layer.
